Reach Pompeii at opening time
In summer, choose the first slot to avoid some tour groups and the hottest hours on this largely unshaded site.
Do not overload the day
Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius in one day works with an organised excursion, but is extremely demanding independently.

Ancient paving, Vesuvius slopes and long distances make comfort essential on archaeological days.
